Know Your People

One of the biggest challenges you will face a new (or experienced) leader is getting to know your team. I’m not talking about knowing their specific talents and skills; I’m talking about getting to know them as a person. Some managers will tell you to avoid building a personal relationship with the individuals you manage. I’m going to tell you that those individuals are fools for not taking advantage of this powerful tool.

Communication, Communication, Communication

Great leaders know how to communicate effectively. There are many pitfalls to communicating with your team effectively. Most of these can be avoided by simply thinking about what you want to say before you say it. Others can be dodged by simply saying what needs to be said in a way that everyone understands.

Look out for Everybody – Except #1

One of the traits that many people learn while working as an employee is that of self-preservation. You learned to constantly look out for the assignments or projects that would get you noticed so you could either move up or move on to greener pastures. Unfortunately, many new managers do not know how to turn this instinct off.
